Most police are comforted by knowing that law abiding citizens will "have our back" if necessary. Believe me, we come across armed citizens every shift. Once we know there's no threat, there's no problem. It pisses me off, and a lot of us, to hear some politican hack chief of police somewhere supporting some limitation of gun ownership and severe restrictions for permits etc... while that same guy carries a gun to protect himself. High level politicians and famous people that oppose gun ownership while they have armed Secret Service or armed protection agencies and bodyguards is another sore spot with me. As far as militias (ones not conducting a criminal enterprise)one only has to pick up a history book militias are one of the few "checks and balances" that keeps this country, and has kept this country, from a totalitarian government. The civilian politicians in power are the ones that have exhibited the biggest problem with militias... and mostly the liberal ones at that. Neil, my point wasn't that it doesn't happen in other parts of the country, my point was directed about NOPD during Katrina that exposed criminal thugs that were police officers. That's what I meant. It's embarassing, astonishing, frustrating,and not indicative of 99% of all other police officers... black, white, hispanic, asian, native american, male or female. I'd like to personally thank this police officer for complicating the jobs of all of us, especially the minority officers who have to put up with even more crap than most of us! Thank you for allowing every bigot in the country the opportunity to lump every black officer, male or female, into the category of race favoring, anti-American,and stupid products of affirmative action! Most of us worked hard just to BE a police officer, are well trained, knowledgable of the law, can apply the law, can remain professional and unbiased in exactly these types of situations, KNOW what our duties are... which includes protecting first amendment rights, especially speech with which we disagree, and have the ability to think on our feet. At least, when I'm teaching the rookies I'll have some video of a real life situation that depicts what NOT to do. I can ASSURE the citizens that the police are NOT going to be government thugs and if the politicians think they can use us as such they'll get a rude awakening. Please don't judge the rest of us by this one incident.
